February 1, 2008 Here's a quote I pulled from a personal ad: The type of guy I'm looking for is adventuresome, but not reckless; highly masculine, but not chauvinistic; and in shape and active, but not into watching sports and doesn't live in a gym. Does a guy like this actually exist? Don't you think that the expectations are unrealistic? An active, in-shape man who doesn’t like sports or working out? There are maybe three straight guys in every city who have that kind of genetics, none over the age of thirty. Active guys love sports, that’s what starts us being active and you can’t separate what you like from what you don’t like in two similar activites. Life is not a Chinese buffet where you pick out one item from each column that you like and can completely ignore some things that you don’t like. In relationships, sometimes you have to eat a little spinach to have a steak. Like the in shape, active guy who doesn't like sports, none of these combinations actually exists. How can you be adventuresome and not reckless? Doesn't adventure imply a bit of recklessness? What kind of adventure doesn't? I mean, mountaineering is adventuresome but also slightly reckless. Not as reckless as not wearing safety equipment when you do it, but a little reckless nonetheless. The person writing this ad is expecting a fantasy man and they just don't exist. Just as fantasy women don't exist.
