Looking For a Hero

Check out the opening of this profile from Yahoo Personals:

Where have all the good men gone and where are all the gods? Where's the great white Hercules to fight the rising odds? Isn't there a white knight upon a fiery steed?

I'm glad that her expectations aren't high! Yes, I know it's only a song, but when you lead with the headline "Holding Out For a Hero," it's a pretty good sign that you're looking for somebody to play that White Knight role that nobody can fill. The first thing thought that goes through my mind is why is your life so bad that you need rescuing? The second thought is that nobody can be the hero that you're picturing in your mind, which is why you're 41 and never married.

The real problem here is that it assumes that there's a huge difference between an ordinary guy and that fabulous Mr. Right. That's not how it works. The guy that's right for you doesn't stand out like Harrison Ford at a Nerd Conference. He's a little better than everybody else and he fits you better. He's not 20% stronger, more handsome, or smarter. Nobody is.

A hero is somebody who goes through life treating people with respect and honesty, sometimes sacrificing his own needs for the greater good. He knows that the right thing is oftentimes the hardest thing to do, but he does it anyway. It's not somebody who rides a fiery steed.
